Later that day, a piece of news changes everything.

It starts with a phone ring and the gravelly voice of Dad’s oldest friend from Mountford.

A tight, painful wheezing emits from my chest.

There’s only one reason why I’d get a call like this.

“Ken,” Alan murmurs carefully. “I’m sorry to call you like this but it’s your dad…”

“No,” I wheeze. “No!”

“He passed away two hours ago.”

My world comes tumbling down.

CHAPTER FIVE

ROMAN

The next week, Effie calls me out of the blue during the middle of my practice. I wipe my sweat away and pick up the phone.

"Hello?"

"We need to talk," she says bluntly.

"Little busy, sorry," I roll my eyes, reading to hang up.

"It's about Kennedy," she sighs. "Just meet me in my office in an hour."

"Effie -"

"It's urgent."

And she hangs up. I let out a sharp exhale. The mention of her name sends shivers down my skin, warm and aching for her again.

After practice, I drive to Effie's building, letting myself in and ignoring the starstruck looks from her staff. My gaze wanders, hoping to find her.

But she's not here.

I knock on Effie's door and she motions for me to sit. I take a seat and watch as she considers my gaze.

"Enjoyed the spectacle you created last week?" She taunts.

I lean back on the chair. "What do you care? We're not dating. We're not together. Wasn't that the original part of your deal."

"Not anymore and you know that. I wanted you to win her over, not isolate her away from you. You're both miserable and unhappy. It's clear as day."

“I thought this was what you wanted.”

Effie looks up, a startled look in those wide eyes. “Why would you think I’d want your unhappiness?”

I shrug, leaning back on the chair. “Because you’ve worked exactly for it.” I fiddle with the material of the armchair, feeling the soft material under my fingertips. “You took her from me. Just like father tried too. Only this time, you were the one that succeeded.”

"And that's why I chose to make amends, why I hired you on this project; to win her back." She straightens her back, a look of remorse settling in those sharp features that look so much like Kyle. “Believe me, I was only trying to protect Kyle. I wanted to protect you too. She was getting in the way of your relationship.”

“That’s none of your business,” I drawl. My eyes meet hers and she falters slightly. “Is it?”

“Roman,” she smiles with a tightness. “I want the best for you too.”

My hands ball into a fist. I feel the rage swell up like a vicious beast, raging for me to scream and shout, to rip into this woman that betrayed my own mother. But I push it down. I don’t want to be that beast anymore.

“You know,” she sighs. She rolls a pen on her desk, her mind in disarray. “I offered her a job because I saw myself in her.”

I knit my brows together. She watches my disbelieving expression and smiles sadly.

“It’s true,” she continues. “I was like her once.
